The Orpheum Theatre seats 2800 people
and is the home of the Vancouver Symphony.
Renovations carried out by Aercoustics in 1995
addressed several problems including a phenomenon
known as image shift. In The Orpheum, singers or
soloists appeared to be perched somewhere above the
ceiling. Corollaries of this effect meant that it was
very difficult for conductors to achieve a reliable
balance between the different sections of the
orchestra. A 1:48 scale model was used first to
confirm the existence of the problem and then to fine
tune the solutions. Convex reflectors were hung
underneath the offending areas of the ceiling. Other
acoustical work included HVAC noise control and the
removal of some unnecessary reflectors above the
stage. Winner of the 1996 Canadian Consulting
Engineers Award of Merit.
...an
unqualified success. The results exceeded our
expectations.
