The design for the Zhongshan Cultural Centre (People's Republic of China) calls for a 1300 seat Opera House/Concert Hall, an 800-seat multi-purpose auditorium, a 200 seat lecture theatre and cinema and museum space. The audience chamber of the 1300 seat auditorium takes the form of a traditional European Opera house. A 10m high orchestra shell, stored in a dedicated room upstage, can be rolled downstage to the proscenium arch, to easily convert the opera house into a concert hall. Other flexible components of the design include removable acoustical banners on the walls, and an adjustable reflector above and in front of the proscenium arch. There are 3 pit lifts in the opera house and 7 lifts that form the front of the stage in the 800-seat room.
